OVERVIEWAntique item
This coffee mill is a rare store model C1, made by Peugeot Freres {Peugeot Brothers} in Sochaux, France circa 1884. The Peugeot business, founded in 1810, began by making tools and kitchen equipment, with their first cast iron coffee mill made circa 1855. Next came bicycles and then of course, their beautiful automobiles. In addition to our thorough research, there is a typed label taped on the bottom with the following information:
Small cast iron store mill
France: Circa: 1884
Mfg by Peugeot Freres
Very rare/ early side bowl style/ Porceline {porcelain} bowl
100% original
Purchased by Reed Edstrom in Tongeren, Belgium 1993
8000 BF's
{BF's are Belgian francs, and 8000 of them would have been worth about 2.00 USD in 1993.}
In addition, there are embossed marks, highlighted in gold, on the mill: Peugeot Freres, C1 and Brevetes SGDG. This last mark is an abbreviation for "Breveté Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement“ (patent without government guarantees). This was a system of patent registrations in France and Belgium, abandoned in 1968, that was believed to absolve the governments of any liability.
This coffee mill retains its original paint, its (unpolished) brass cover and all its wooden parts including the rectangular base, the handle and the drawer with its matching knob. The mechanism that turns the grinder appears to work perfectly. The height of the mill, including the base, is 12 5/8 inches without the cover, and 16 1/2 inches with the cover on. It's about 13 inches wide from the edge of the base to the end of the handle. The weight is 11 pounds 6 ounces complete.
The cover fits loosely on the bowl; we're not sure if that's typical or not. There is minor chipping to the black paint on the edges of the bowl (shown) and the drawer is very slightly warped; it closes, though not quite tightly at the bottom, but it looks fine. Otherwise, this French antique mill displays beautifully. Given that Peugeot has made over 1000 different variations of their mills, this C1 model is a rare find.
